What’s This? Another Post About Food?

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. “This blog isn’t supposed to be about food!” Well, in case you haven’t noticed, it’s now Christmastime, and with Christmas time comes parties – and with parties comes food. Lots of delicious, savory food. Therefore, in order to contribute to the “fanciness” of these Christmas parties, I would like to contribute a personal recipe for a salad that is sure to delight all. Enjoy!

Vegetable Salad

Ingredients: Salad

Six cups broccoli florets
Six cups cauliflower, chopped
Three cups cherry tomatoes
One red onion, finely chopped
One can pitted ripe olives sliced (optional)

Ingredients: Dressing

One envelope ranch salad dressing powder (or three tablespoons ranch salad dressing)
Two-thirds cup olive oil
One-fourth cup apple cider vinegar


Combine the broccoli florets, cauliflower, tomatoes, onion, and olives in a large bowl. Then prepare the dressing by putting the ranch, olive oil, and apple cider vinegar in a carafe and shake well. Pour the prepared dressing onto the salad and toss. Finally, chill the salad for at least two hours before serving.

Because the majority of people at Christmas parties as generally adults, this recipe (created by my mother) is designed to have a more mature taste. It pairs well with many main dishes, which makes it ideal for a party with many different flavors and foods.

Also, since parties never go well without excellent side dishes, I’d also like to contribute a great party hashbrowns dish that’s a favorite at my house! This dish is designed to be pleasing to all taste buds from young to old.

Cheesy Party Hashbrowns


Two pounds cubed hash browns
Two cans creams of chicken soup -OR- One can cream of chicken soup, one can cream of onion soup
One package shredded cheddar cheese
One pint of sour scream
Three-fourths cup butter – melted
One-fourth cup butter – melted (this goes on top of the hashbrowns)
One chopped onion
One tablespoon garlic salt (optional)
Two cups crushed corn flakes


Combine all ingredients (putting the hashbrowns in last) in a nine inch by thirteen inch pan. Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately one hour and twenty-five minutes. Take out of the oven and top with cornflakes and the remaining one-fourth cup melted butter.

I should note that this cheesy hashbrown recipe is not very healthy; it has a high sodium and saturated fat content. Therefore, if one is on a diet or simply trying to lower his or her blood pressure, he or she should not eat this dish. One also should not eat it if they are lactose-intolerant.
